The Dalhousie Tigers defeated the Moncton Aigles Bleus Saturday afternoon 3-1 at Dalplex.
The first set started with Cassidy Martin (Dieppe, NB) getting an ace for Moncton off the serve.
The 2022-23 AUS MVP Lucy Glen-Carter (Toronto, ON) got her first kill of the day to tie the set 2-2. She finished the set with four kills.
Dal began to build a lead, as Grace Calnan (Cole Harbour, NS) gave Dal a 6-4 lead with a kill.
The barrage continued with a Talia Vydykhan (Hammonds Plains, NS) kill to make it 8-4, causing Moncton to call a timeout.
Moncton began to come back as Ivana Urquhart-Mladineo (Saint-Jean, NB) got a kill to make the game 9-7.
Later in the set, Glen-Carter powered a spike into Moncton's end, giving Dal a 13-10 lead.
Halfway through the set, it was knotted up at 15-15 after a kill from Anne Paquette (Baie Sainte-Anne, NB), making the Tigers call a timeout.
Vydykhan got a block to give the Tigers a point to make it 17-16 for the Tigers.
Glen-Carter picked up another kill to give the Tigers a 22-19 lead. This was directly followed by a block from Paris Stewart (Halifax, NS) to give the Tigers a comfortable 23-19 lead.
An ace from Kirsty Longino (Calgary, AB) ended the set, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the match.
Ella Hornby (Calgary, AB) got Dal on the board in the second set with a kill as the Tigers trailed 2-1.
Stewart followed this up with a kill to tie the set 2-2.
Vydykhan tipped the ball over for a kill to give the Tigers a 7-5 lead. The Tigers continued to build the lead as Stewart powered the ball over to give the Tigers a 9-5 lead.
Longino scored an ace to win the set, giving Dal a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, Hornby got Dal on the board with a kill as Dal trailed 2-1 in the set.
Stewart followed it up with a kill of her own to tie the set 2-2.
Dal's player of the game, Calnan, would build upon Dal's lead with a cross-court kill to make it 8-5. Calnan was fantastic throughout the match, finishing it with nine kills.
Glen-Carter had a giant swing that was too powerful for Moncton to block, giving Dal a 12-8 lead.
Moncton would start to come back with a kill from Kyana Sivret (Rivière-à-la-Truite, NB) to bring Moncton within one point. Then, Sophie Hedou (Edmundston, NB) tied the game 12-12 with a kill.
Stewart would give Dal the lead back with a kill of her own. Stewart finished the game with a game-high 13 kills.
Glen-Carter scored back-to-back aces later in the set to give Dal a 16-12 lead.
Hannah Lytwyn (Winnipeg, MB) got a kill to bring Moncton within four. However, Dal continued to dominate the set, as Moncton hit the ball out of bounds, winning the Tigers the set 25-19.
Vydykhan followed up Chiasson's kill with a substantial spike, bringing Dal within two points.
Hedou made it 11-8 with a kill for Moncton. Later in the set, Hedou heated up, giving Moncton a 14-10 lead with a kill.
Back-to-back errors by Dal gave Moncton a significant 17-11 lead.
Calnan had a big swing, making it 20-14. However, it would not be enough for the Tigers as Moncton closed the third set 25-21.
Dal responded in the fourth set, getting off to a 6-4 lead thanks to another Calnan kill.
Longino would set up Vydykhan for a kill, giving Dal a 7-4 lead. Vydykhan finished the match with 10 kills. Vydykhan powered through another kill later in the set, giving Dal a 14-8 lead.
Sivret made the set 20-12 with a kill for Moncton. The Tigers would hold onto the lead, with the match-winning kill from Hornby to win the set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
The player of the game for Moncton was Sophie Hedou, who finished with eight kills.
Dal's next match is next week at the University of New Brunswick at 6pm.
Moncton plays Acadia next Saturday at 2pm.
