(Halifax, NS) – In the first match of a back to back set, the Dalhousie Tigers hosted l'Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues in women's volleyball action. The Tigers were able to jump out to quick leads in sets, helped them on the way to a 3-0 victory in the match.
After Moncton got off to a strong start with two kills from Pascale Doiron (Dieppe, NB), the Tigers settled in and picked up seven straight points with kills from Mieke DuMont (Kamloops, BC) and Hannah Aldcorn (Calgary, AB).
The run pushed the Tigers ahead 10-4, and they were able to carry that lead into the technical timeout after a big kill from Victoria Haworth (Waverly, NS), up 16-7.
The Tigers quickly increased their lead out of the timeout with kills coming from Julie Moore (Halifax, NS), jumping ahead 22-10.
Moncton gave the Tigers some trouble in closing out the set, bringing themselves back in it with kills from Joanie Arsenault (Tracadié-Sheila, NB) and another one from Doiron to make it 24-17.
The Tigers finally closed out the set however, with Vienna Harwood picking up her first kill of the match to make it 25-17, and 1-0 lead in the match.
The Tigers size at the net was a major factor at the start of the second set as they went on an early run thanks to some phenomenal serving by Julie Moore, picking up two aces, and some massive blocks by DuMont and Haworth.
That run quickly made it 10-1 for the Tigers in the set, but l'Aigles Bleues weren't out of it yet, with Arsenault picking up a kill and a big block in a run to come within six before the break.
Julie Moore picked up two more kills after the streak by Moncton however, and they took a 16-8 lead into the timeout.
Continuing to pick up kills late in the set, the Tigers extended the lead after the timeout with Moore and Haworth contributing to the scoring while Vienna Harwood (Halifax, NS) drove home the final kill to give the Tigers the 25-15 win in the set.
With that, the Tigers took a 2 set to 0 lead in the match.
The Tigers once again came out hot in the third set, with Libby Falkenham (Halifax, NS) getting things started with a block and back to back service aces.
Again there was no quit in l'Aigles Bleues after getting down 10-3 in the set, picking up three straight points with a kill from Doiron, and a very nice service ace from Arsenault to bring them within four, and forcing a timeout from the Tigers.
The teams traded kills before the break, but the Tigers took a 16-10 lead into the timeout after another kill from Victoria Haworth landed right on the line.
The size of the Tigers continued to help them out after the timeout, with Haworth picking up back to back blocks, followed by back to back kills from Courtney Baker (Bridgewater, NS) to make it 20-10 for the Tigers.
L'Aigles Bleues made it interesting late in the set, with some nice serves from Nicole Jamieson (Moncton, NB) causing problems for the Tigers, but on a tough error to end the match on, the Tigers took a 25-16 win in the set, for a straight-set victory.
Pascale Doiron led Moncton with 7 kills in the match, while Julie Moore had a game-high 12 kills, with Courtney Baker earning the Subway Player of the Game title with 5 kills and 20 assists.
The Tigers will be back on the court tomorrow when they host UNB, while UdeM will also play tomorrow, hosting Saint Mary's.
