Tigers land top women's volleyball recruit

(Halifax, N.S.) Dalhousie University women’s volleyball coach Rick Scott is pleased to announce the commitment of Julie Moore to the Tigers 2017-18 lineup.

A 5’11 left side hitter, Moore has been a member of Nova Scotia’s provincial team program the last five seasons and is currently part of the core training group for the 2017 Canada Games volleyball team.

She’s garnered national interest and spent the last two summers as part of Canada’s youth national program. This past summer, she was selected as an alternate to the junior national team and spent a week training with the group in Winnipeg.

Moore has also been a member of the Tigers Volleyball Club for five seasons and has four provincial club championship titles under her belt. She received all-star nods in 2014 and 2015 for her strong play and was named the U18 championship MVP in 2016.

A grade 12 student at Citadel High School, Moore has helped lead the Phoenix to back-to-back Nova Scotia High School Athletic Federation (NSSAF) championship titles in 2014 and 2015. She and her teammates will hope to make it three in a row December 2 and 3 at this year’s championship in Truro.

“I wanted to go to a school with both an excellent academic reputation and a strong volleyball program,” says Moore. “The Tigers program has been very successful and I’m excited to be a part of its future success. I grew up watching the Tigers and I can’t wait to wear the Black and Gold. The current players have been so welcoming and Coach Scott has been a huge part of my development as a player. I know I will continue to improve under his leadership.”

A true multisport-athlete, Moore has played hockey at the provincial team level and helped Citadel High School to an NSSAF championship title last season. She has been accepted to Dalhousie’s Kinesiology program.

“We are thrilled to have Julie commit to our program.,” says Scott. “Julie is not only one of the top female volleyball recruits in Atlantic Canada but also one of the top recruits in the entire country. She is of high character and is a most committed individual which is important in our team culture. We believe that she will play an important role for the Tigers moving forward and help us strive toward continued championship success at both the AUS level and U Sports level.”

Moore’s ties to Dalhousie and the volleyball program runs deep. She will be the fifth generation of her family to attend Dalhousie and has two uncles and an aunt who all played on the Tigers volleyball teams in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Her mother, Karen (Fraser) Moore played for five years with the Tigers, leading them to a gold medal win at the 1982 CIAU (U Sports) championship, the school’s first and only national championship in women’s volleyball.
