Varsity Reds fall 3-0 to Tigers

On Saturday, January 16, the Dalhousie Tigers played the UNB Varsity Reds for their second game of the weekend at Dalplex. The final score of the game was 3-0 (25-21. 25-16, 25-11) resulting in another win for the Tigers.

Although UNB had the first point of the game, Dalhousie fought back and the teams continued to match each other point for point until the Tigers brought themselves up to a five point lead. UNB's Lauren Joyce (Haywards Heath, UK) and Paige Nelmes (Poole, UK) made some big blocks for the Varsity Reds, stopping many of the Tigers' chances. However, Anna Dunn-Suen (Halifax, NS) and Jessica Josenhans (Lunenburg, NS) made some excellent kills which helped lead the Tigers to their first set win with a score of 25-21.

Dalhousie earned the first point of the second period and never looked back. Setter, Abby Czenze (Halifax, NS), who had 23 assists throughout the game, really helped set up her teammates for the offence. On the opposition, Maggie McLenahan (Oromocto, NB) made several digs – 11 total – which helped continue the rallies and keep the Varsity Reds in the game. To finish the set, Dalhousie's Lauren Koskowich (Calgary, AB), who made two consecutive service aces, brought the Tigers to a final score of 25-16 over the Varsity Reds.

Mieke DuMont (Kamloops, BC) started the third set off with a big hit for the Tigers which was quickly followed by a service ace from Courtney Baker (Bridgewater, NS) who had five consecutive serves in a row to start the set. UNB's Megan Kuciak (Ottawa, ON) made several kills for the Varsity Reds in the final set, but Dalhousie's DuMont and Dunn-Suen dominated on the attack. The final score of the set was 25-11 for the Tigers, winning them the game.

The final score of the game was 3-0 (25-21. 25-16, 25-11) for Dalhousie over UNB. Player of the game for the Tigers was Lauren Koskowich and player of the  game for the Varsity Reds was Lauren Joyce. Dalhousie's (8-2) next game is on Sunday, January 24 against Moncton (2-8) and UNB (3-8) will play again on Friday, January 29 against Memorial (4-4).
