Tigers take down Huskies

(Halifax, NS) - The visiting Dalhousie Tigers defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 3-1 in Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball action Friday night from the Homburg Centre.
Both teams split the first two sets 25-18 TIgers and 25-17 Huskies before Dalhousie took control in the final two sets 25-13 and 25-10 for the victory.
The opening set saw both teams trade points early on when SMU led 8-7. A Saint Mary's service error started a six point Tiger run and the lead jumped up 13-8. A Dalhousie service error of their own ended their run and had them up 13-9. The Tigers` would continue to increase their lead as the set wore on to 20-14. A mini Huskies rally brought SMU to within 21-18 before DAL ended the set on a 4-0 run, good for the 25-18 first set win.
The Tigers built a 4-1 lead in the second set before SMU when on a run themselves and took the lead 7-4. Dalhousie battled back and tied it up 8-8. A four point Saint Mary's run had the Huskies in front for good at 12-8. SMU increased the lead to as much as nine (22-13) and ended the second set up 25-17.
Dalhouse controlled the third and fourth sets, taking an early 3-0 third set run. The Tigers eventually stretched their lead to as high as 13 (20-7) before winning the set 25-13. The fourth set saw the Huskies take a quick 2-0 lead when a four point run had Dal up 4-2. Saint Mary's drew even at 5-5 and this was the closest the rest of the set was for SMU. Runs of four and an eight point killer run had it 23-8 and Dal hung on to take the fourth set 25-10. Dalhouse held advantages in total kills (50-29), digs (59-48), and blocks (9-6), while Saint Mary's controlled the total attack (123-120).
Mieke DuMont (Kamloops, BC) led all hitters on the night with 18.0 total points on 14 kills and 36 total attacks for Dalhousie while her teammates Anna Dunn-Suen (Halifax) had 16.0 total points on 15 kills and 31 total attacks and Jessica Josenhans (Lunenburg, NS) finished with 15.0 total points on 10 kills and 13 total attacks.
Erica Dowling (Lower Sackville, NS) paced the Huskies with 10.0 total points on nine kills and 22 total attacks while Erin Smith (Moncton, NB) added 9.0 total points for Saint Mary's and Lindsay Donovan (London, ON) had 8.0 total points.
The Huskies are 0-1 early in the year and travel to UNB Saturday to take on the Varsity Reds at 6 p.m. The Tigers improve to 2-0 and host Acadia Sunday, November 15th.
