Tigers fall to REDS in OT
Leah MacSween recorded a goal and an assist in the 4-3 loss Saturday.
The Dalhousie Tigers fell to the UNB REDS 4-3 in overtime on Saturday in Fredericton, NB.
The first period saw a strong defensive performance from Dalhousie's Madison King, who made numerous saves to keep the score level at 0-0. Despite facing several power play opportunities from the REDS, King successfully defended against multiple shots, including attempts from Olivia Eustace and Melanie Drost. Dalhousie managed to counter with a few offensive attempts, with Emmerson Gormley and Abby Wamboldt both having shots on goal, but all were saved by the REDS' Cassie McCallum. The teams exchanged penalties, with Madison Wardle and Regan Duffy serving time in the box, but neither side capitalized on the power plays.
In the second period, Emma Robertson scored the first goal of the game for Dalhousie at 8:47 during a power play, assisted by Mollie Power and Leah MacSween. Shortly after, the REDS responded with two goals, the first by Katelyn Scott at 10:34, and another by Olivia Eustace at 11:53, putting them ahead 2-1. Despite a solid defensive effort, including multiple saves by Madison King and blocked shots by Gabrielle Noordijk and Madison Wardle, Dalhousie ended the period trailing by one goal.
In the third period, Dalhousie started strong with a goal by Leah MacSween at 00:28, assisted by Regan Duffy, which was her first goal of the season. This momentum continued when Gabrielle Noordijk scored on a power play at 07:07, with assists from Madison Wardle and Regan Duffy. Despite a goal by the REDS' Payton Hargreaves at 11:35, Dalhousie's defense, particularly through saves by Madison King, managed to keep the score tied at the end of the period.
The overtime period began with Leah MacSween winning the initial faceoff for Dalhousie. Despite a strong defensive effort, including two consecutive saves by Madison King at 2:47, the REDS managed to score a goal at 4:56, concluding the period. Dalhousie had a power play opportunity following a tripping penalty on the REDS' Lauren Carter, but was unable to convert, ending the game with a final score of 4-3 in favor of the REDS.
Gabrielle Noordijk, a defenseman for Dalhousie, stood out with a power play goal and two blocked shots. Emma Robertson, playing center, also made a significant contribution with a power play goal, having taken four shots in total. Leah MacSween made her mark with one goal and one assist, in addition to winning 10 faceoffs. Regan Duffy, another key player, provided two assists, contributing significantly to the team's offensive efforts. In goal, Madison King made 32 saves, despite facing a tough loss, highlighting her resilience in the net.
The Tigers return to the ice on Wednesday when they travel to Moncton.
