First Year Feature: Samantha Manieri
We'd like to introduce you to first year women's basketball player, Samantha Manieri!
The transition from high school to university athletics is significant. We're highlighting first year athletes from all varsity teams this season who are on the path to achieving greatness here at Dalhousie University.
This week we would like to introduce Samantha Manieri, a first year on the women's basketball team. Hailing from Toronto, Manieri is studying kinesiology.
How long have you been playing basketball?
I have been playing basketball since grade 4.
Did you play any other sports growing up?
Yes, I did. I played a variety of other sports growing up. The main ones were tennis,
swimming, skiing, track and field, and karate.
Who is somebody in sport you admired growing up and why?
I admired Serena Williams.
What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?
The most memorable moment in my Dalhousie career was beating CBU. It was our first
season wins.
What made you choose Dalhousie University?
I chose Dalhousie because of the combination of the basketball coaching staff, the players,
and the strong kinesiology program.
Did any of your family members attend Dalhousie University?
No
What are some differences you've noticed being a part of a DAL team compared to your previous teams?
The greatest difference I have noticed since becoming a Dal athlete is the involvement of
community. Being a part of a DAL team provides tons of support to build personal
relationships and improve performance on the court.
How would you describe your time with the team so far?
My time on the basketball team has been filled with all kinds of excitement.
What are some of your interests outside of sports?
Spend time outside, going on long walks, reading in the sun, cooking, baking, and card
games.
Any pre-game superstitions/routines?
I wear my hair the same way for every game, and I must have a blue Gatorade and a Go-Go
squeeze for every game.
What is the biggest risk you've taken so far in your athletic career?
The biggest risk I have taken in my athletic career is accepting an offer at a school in a
different province from where I grew up.
What was the coolest experience you've had so far this year?
The coolest experience I had this year was being able to travel back home with the DAL
team, to Toronto, and play university teams I watched growing up.
Any hidden talents?
I know how to sew and flip clothes
