Axewomen beat Tigers 71-54

On Wednesday, the Dalhousie Tigers fell to the Acadia University Axewomen with a final score of 71-54 at Dalplex.
In the first quarter, Dalhousie demonstrated a strong performance with Samantha Manieri contributing significantly by scoring multiple layups and a free throw, helping the team maintain a competitive edge. Madelyn White played a crucial role by making a key 3-pointer and a layup, contributing to Dalhousie's ability to keep the game close. Despite some missed opportunities, the team showed resilience with defensive rebounds and steals, culminating in a narrow 19-18 lead at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Simona Matic was a key player for the Tigers, contributing with multiple free throws and an important assist at 1:23. Mercy Olugu provided a strong presence, scoring a layup in the paint with 1:15 remaining, and securing defensive rebounds. Despite a tough shooting quarter, Dalhousie managed to stay competitive, with Samantha Manieri and Sydney Guker-Wickie actively involved in rebounds and steals. Acadia led by as much as seven points at 4:41, and Dalhousie trailed by five points at the end of the quarter.
In the third quarter, Guker-Wickie led Dalhousie's efforts with a layup and two successful free throws, trimming Acadia's lead to 40-35 at the 7:45 mark. However, Acadia extended their advantage with a series of successful baskets, including a 3-pointer by Samantha Russell, contributing to their 24-point quarter. Despite Dalhousie's attempts to close the gap, including a layup by Melina Collins assisted by Matic, Acadia maintained control, ending the quarter with a 59-38 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Dalhousie made a notable push with 16 points, highlighted by Sydney Guker-Wickie's layup at the 9:00 mark and Madelyn White's jumper assisted by Eva Widmeyer at 5:30, bringing the score to 64-44. Melina Collins contributed significantly with a 3-pointer and later added a layup following her steal in the final minutes. Despite the efforts and a strong defensive block by Madelyn White, Acadia maintained their lead, with a quarter score of 12 points, supported by two 3-pointers from Iris Leuschner.
