Axewomen beat Tigers 67-37

The Dalhousie Tigers fell to Acadia 67-37 on Sunday at Stu Aberdeen Court.
In the first quarter, Dalhousie started strong with Eva Widmeyer scoring a layup following a steal by Sydney Guker-Wickie to take an early 2-0 lead at 9:42. The Axewomen responded with a series of buckets, including a 3-pointer from Samantha Russell, to build a lead. Despite a defensive rebound and block by Sydney Guker-Wickie, Dalhousie faced challenges, trailing the Axewomen 15-9 by the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Dalhousie's Guker-Wickie opened the scoring with a layup at 9:25, bringing the score to 11-15. Despite a series of defensive rebounds by Mercy Olugu and Widmeyer, the Tigers faced a strong offensive push from the Axewomen, who extended their lead to 17 points at one point during the quarter. Widmeyer contributed significantly with two successful layups, while Melina Collins added another, closing the quarter with Dalhousie scoring 11 points against the Axewomen's 22.
In the third quarter, the Tigers managed to score 11 points against the Axewomen's 20. The quarter began with Samantha Manieri scoring a layup at the 10:00 mark, followed by Widmeyer's layup assisted by Collins. Olugu contributed with a layup and two free throws, while Madelyn White added a 3-pointer with an assist from Olugu at the end of the quarter. Despite the Axewomen's strong performance with their largest lead reaching 29 points at 0:58, Dalhousie showed resilience with key contributions from Olugu, Widmeyer, and White.
In the fourth quarter, Dalhousie began with a strong defensive effort, as Sophie Carmichael secured a defensive rebound following an Acadia missed 3-point attempt. Despite several missed shots early in the quarter, Dalhousie found success with Widmeyer's jumper at 5:42, assisted by Carmichael, bringing the score to 35-60. Samantha Manieri contributed to Dalhousie's scoring with a layup in the paint, assisted by Simona Matic, while White added another layup late in the quarter, assisted again by Simona Matic, to finalize the scoring for Dalhousie at 37-67.
Eva Widmeyer led the Dalhousie basketball team with 10 points, making 5-of-14 field goals, which was highlighted as her standout performance. Karina Sarai was notable for her defensive contributions, recording three blocks and one steal. Mercy Olugu contributed significantly with six points and a team-high five rebounds, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Sydney Guker-Wickie added five points, three rebounds, and three assists, along with one block and one steal.
The Tigers and Axewomen return to the court on Wednesday at Dalplex.
