Dalhousie Tigers Power Past Memorial Sea-Hawks 76-63
Kaitlyn Ferrier had a game-high 31 points in the win on Saturday.
ST. JOHN'S, NL – The Dalhousie Tigers secured a 76-63 victory over the Memorial Sea-Hawks in an AUS women's basketball showdown on Saturday evening at The Works Fieldhouse.
Dalhousie (2-6) was led by standout guard Kaitlyn Ferrier, who scored a game-high 31 points, including 11-of-13 from the free-throw line. Ferrier's dominant performance, along with key contributions from Melina Collins (14 points, 8 rebounds) and Madelyn White (12 points), propelled the Tigers to a comfortable win after holding a 46-37 lead at halftime.
Despite Memorial's (1-7) efforts, which included a 16-point performance from Eavan McLaughlin, the Sea-Hawks couldn't find the offensive consistency needed to challenge Dalhousie. Memorial struggled with shooting accuracy, finishing the game with a 29.2% field goal percentage, compared to Dalhousie's 34.4%. In particular, Memorial's shooting woes were evident in the fourth quarter, where they managed just 10 points.
Dalhousie took control early, building a 22-19 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 46-37 at the half. Memorial fought back in the third, cutting the deficit to just 57-53, but Dalhousie's defense tightened in the final quarter, holding the Sea-Hawks to just 10 points while scoring 19 of their own.
The Tigers capitalized on Memorial's turnovers, scoring 22 points off turnovers, and also had the edge in second-chance points (16 to 7). Memorial's bench was outscored 27-9, with Dalhousie receiving strong performances from their reserves, including White, who contributed 12 points in just 19 minutes of play.
In addition to Ferrier's scoring, Dalhousie benefited from solid all-around play, including 9 rebounds from Karina Sarai and 4 assists from Collins. Memorial was paced by McLaughlin, who struggled with her shooting but added 5 rebounds, while Carly Norris contributed 7 points and 12 rebounds.
Dalhousie will look to build on this win as they head into their final game of 2024 versus SMU on Saturday. Memorial will aim to earn their second win of the season next weekend versus Cape Breton.
