Sea-Hawks use OT to get past Tigers

(St. John's, NL) – The Memorial Sea-Hawks won their second game of the season as they topped the Dalhousie Tigers 80-77 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at The Field House. The win keeps the Sea-Hawks in the playoff hunt, as they trail the UPEI Panthers by four points going into next weekend.

Memorial jumped out to an early lead on Sunday, behind a hot start from second-year guard Sydney Stewart. Stewart dropped nine points in the opening frame, which gave the Sea-Hawks a 19-15 lead after the first.

Dalhousie responded in the second quarter and was able to cut the Sea-Hawks lead to just three points heading into halftime. The Tigers were lead in the first half by Tessa Stammberger, who scored 10 first half points, before getting injured. Unfortunately for the Tigers, Stammberger was unable to return.

Memorial stretch their lead in the third quarter, as Sydney Ezekiel went three for three from outside for nine points in just four minutes of play. The Sea-Hawks would finish the quarter with a ten-point lead.

Dalhousie would battle back in the fourth and take the quarter by a score of 21-11, which forced the game into overtime. In the extra frame, Memorial would edge the Tigers behind strong play from Sydney Stewart. The win was the first for Memorial this season on home court.

Leading scorers for Memorial were Sydney Stewart, who finished with a game high 26 points, while also pulling down four rebounds and registering four steals. Lindsay Taylor had her best game of the season, with 15 points off the bench for the Sea-Hawks. Taylor also made the game-tying bucket to force overtime for the Sea-Hawks.

Megan Thompson led the Tigers off the bench, with 15 points and five rebounds. Ainsley MacIntyre finished the game with 15 points and nine rebounds and Diedre Alexander had 14 points and seven rebounds.
