The Dalhousie Sailing Team (DST) is a student-run tier 1 club that provides sailors with the opportunity to learn how to sail and compete in Collegiate Sailing Circuits across North America. The
DST provides different levels of teams from recreational sailing to competitive varsity sailing for experienced sailors. DST begins sailing in September and the season continues until the first of November.
Team Commitment
The competitive sailing team practices and races in 420s, a 2-person dinghy. Practices will take place out of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron in Halifax’s Northwest Arm. The Dalhousie Sailing Team is a member of the Canadian Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (CICSA) and competes in regattas across eastern Canada.
Recreational sailing is available for Dalhousie students with or without sailing experience. If you have always wanted to sail or have just taken a break from the water and are itching to get back in a boat, the recreational program is a great option. The recreational team sails J-22s, a twenty-two foot boat with the capacity of 5-6 people including a qualified skipper. Rec sailing sessions will take place 2-3 times every Saturday starting in September until the end of October.
Varsity Dinghy Team
The varsity dinghy team competes across north America. Tryout to be part of Canada's 1st Place Collegiate Sailing Team
JV Dinghy Team
The JV team is a great way for sailors with limited race experience to get training with our team and learn to compete. JV sailors often work their way up to Varsity!
Keelboat Team
The competitive keelboat team provides sailors with many opportunities to explore the world, gain new skill sets, and prepare for a career in sailing beyond the collegiate circuit. Our team practices every Wednesday evening, and some weekends, throughout the fall season.
Learn to Sail
The recreational team offers novice sailors an opportunity to get on the water and learn hands on with a knowledgeable instructor. Dedicated sailors can progress up to the JV Team where they will learn to race and represent Dal at competitions! The team meets on weekends sailing in Halifax's Northwest Arm.
