Recap provided by Memorial Athletics
The Memorial Sea-Hawks downed the Dalhousie Tigers 1-0 in their AUS regular season opener on Friday night.
The Sea-Hawks dominated possession, defending the intense Tigers press during the first 20 minutes. An abundance of free kicks close to each net were given to both teams during the first half but neither team could find the back of the net on these chances.
In the 35th minute, Rodion Kichimov (Winnipeg, MB) sent a through ball that split through the Tiger's defenders, giving Colin Connors (St. Johns, NL) a perfect opportunity, unleashing the ball past the Tigers goalie to gain a 1-0 lead.
To start the second half, both teams made the ball do all the work, soaring back and forth across the field. Adding to the aggressive match, numerous fouls resulting in free kicks were awarded.
A header goal scored by Cabhan O'Keefe for the Sea-Hawks was ruled offside in the 79th minute to keep the game 1-0 for Memorial.
A very energetic, fair fight during the second half led to frustrations from both teams not being able to convert on any chances but gaining many free kicks.
Excelling in their hard-fought season opener, the Memorial Sea-Hawks held onto their early lead to defeat the Dalhousie Tigers 1-0. The Sea-Hawks will be back in action Sunday, September 3 to battle the Tigers once again.
