Tigers announce major award winners

Dalhousie University’s Department of Athletics recognized inspirational athletes, committed coaches and incredible volunteers at the 69th Annual Black and Gold Athletic Awards Banquet last night.

This season, Dalhousie celebrated six AUS championship titles, five U SPORTS All-Canadian awards, 18 major AUS and U SPORTS awards, 51 AUS all-stars, and three U SPORTS medals. The men’s curling team earned a silver medal and the women’s team a bronze medal at the U SPORTS championships, while track and field’s Zach James won a U SPORTS silver medal in the 600m. James, along with men’s basketball player Malcolm Christie were co-male athletes of the year, each winning the Climo Award for the first time. Cross country and track and field athlete Waverley Mulligan won the Class of 55 award as female athlete of the year.

Third-year commerce student Christie recorded the second most points in the AUS this season with 443 and averaged 22.1 points per game. The Fredericton, New Brunswick native is the all-time leader at Dalhousie for single-season three-point shots made with 79 this season and set a new Dalhousie record for most points scored in a game with 51. He was named a first team all-Canadian, the AUS MVP, a first team and tournament all-star for his efforts this season.

Hailing from Windsor, Nova Scotia, James qualified for the U SPORTS championship early in the season this year allowing him to train right through the AUS championship in February. Despite not tapering for the meet, James won an AUS bronze medal in the 600m and was a member of the bronze medal winning 4x800m relay team and the gold medal winning 4x400m relay team for the Tigers. At the national meet he ran the second-best time in Dalhousie history in the 600m to claim a silver medal and be named a second team all-Canadian.

First year speech language pathology student Mulligan was the top runner except for her first race this season. The Kingston, Ontario native finished fifth at the AUS championship and 23rd at the national race. In second semester she won three gold medals at the AUS track and field championship and finished fourth in the 1500m and 300m at the U SPORTS championship.
