The UPEI Panthers' playoff chances took a critical hit Saturday afternoon as a lone first-half goal by the Dalhousie Tigers dealt them a 1-0 defeat, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy.
The game's only goal came just before halftime when Dalhousie's Elise Evans (Toronto, ON) sent a perfect cross to Taylor Heard (Ottawa, ON), who tapped it past UPEI goalkeeper Claudia Mazzei (Burlington, ON) in the 45th minute.
Mazzei was a standout for the Panthers, making seven saves to keep her team in the game. Despite her efforts, the UPEI offence struggled to generate chances, managing just one shot on target. Dalhousie goalkeeper Brianne MacDonald (Chelsea, QC) earned a relatively easy clean sheet, being credited with just one save.
Heard was named the player of the game for the Tigers for her game winning goal.
With the loss, the Panthers now find themselves in a must-win situation for their remaining three regular-season games to secure a playoff spot. Their next challenge comes Sunday when they travel to Halifax to face the Saint Mary's Huskies.
Meanwhile, the Dalhousie Tigers head to Sackville to take on the Mount Allison Mounties at 1pm AT.
