(FREDERICTON, NB) Despite being outshot 32-14, the Dalhousie Tigers edged the UNB REDS 3-2 in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Friday night at UNB's Aitken Centre.
The Tigers struck first, with Abby Wamboldt (Hammonds Plains, NS) slipping a shot in from the side of the net at 2:05 of the opening period, giving them an early 1-0 lead.
There was action at both ends of the ice, but the Tigers spent much of the first period in a defensive stance, fending off pressure from the REDS.
UNB finally broke through at 13:27, with Hilary Wood (Miramichi, NB) capitalizing on sustained offensive play to tie the game 1-1.
The Tigers wasted no time asserting themselves in the second period, with Ava Boyle (Ottawa, ON) scoring just 20 seconds in to extend their lead.
Despite plenty of back-and-forth action, the Tigers went up 3-1 at 9:37, with Abby Larkin (Mermaid, PE) finding the net.
Late in the period, the REDS had a goal disallowed due to a high stick, adding to their frustration.
UNB turned up the pressure in the final two minutes, dominating offensively, but the Tigers held firm, taking their 3-1 lead to the second intermission.
UNB's relentless pressure continued in the third period and paid off. Just 53 seconds in, Madelyn Pears (Ottawa, ON) scored to close the gap to 3-2.
Late in the third, the Tigers were forced to pull starting goalie Madison King (Burlington, ON) due to an apparent injury, temporarily replacing her with Grace Beer (Oakville, ON).
Beer was between the pipes for just a 1:28 before King re-entered the game.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, the REDS pulled their goalie with 1:40 left to add a sixth skater, but despite their efforts, the Tigers held on for the 3-2 victory.
King earned the win in the Dal net, turning away 28 of the 30 shots she faced. Beer made the most of her time in goal, stopping the only two shots directed her way.
The REDS will face off against UdeM, in Moncton, on Saturday at 7:00pm. The Tigers head to Charlottetown to take on UPEI in an afternoon matchup starting at 3:00pm.
