Mounties outlast Tigers to win 4-3

RECAP BY: Ethan Hunt

(Halifax, NS) - The Mount Allison Mounties spoiled the Dalhousie Tigers' senior night with a 4-3 win on Saturday night at the Halifax Forum.

Skye McDonald (Torbrook, NS) saved 45 shots, including standing on her head to keep the puck out of the net in the last few minutes when Dalhousie had all the momentum, and she took home player of the game.

Within 30 seconds of puck drop the puck ended up in the back of the net, when Brooklyn Paisley (Shawinigan Lakes, BC) deflected the puck off her gloves past Mount Allison's goalie, but the referee waved the goal off immediately.

After a top of the circle shot from a Mounties forward, chaos ensued in the DAL crease, but Maggie Baxter (Mahone Bay, NS) managed to keep the puck out of the net, and right after DAL kept the puck out of the net, Emma Bishop (Bedford, NS) went the other way, held off her defender, but could not wrap it around McDonald.

After Paisley was called for a double minor with just over a minute remaining, Mount Allison found the back of the net, when Dallis Mackenzie (Trenton, ON) tipped the puck past Baxter, and the Mounties went into intermission up 1-0.

After MTA were held off the board on a power play, Jenna Wiebe (Calgary, AB) circling down the right side of the ice found Oceane Asham (Portage La Prairie, MB) in the slot who rifled the puck past Baxter.

The Tigers almost cut into the two goal lead, when Izzy Weist's (Torbay, NL) short angle shot, then she got her own rebound, and her shot bounced off of McDonald towards a DAL forward in front of the net, but they could not get a stick on it.

Paisley created another chance, when she put off her defender, drove down the right side, but could not wrap it around McDonald, and on the same shift, McDonald rejected Mackenzie Drake's (Dartmouth, NS) shot at an empty net off of a rebound.

The Mounties went into the third period with a 2-0 lead.

The Mounties continued to add onto their lead less than 30 seconds into the period, when Mollie Grabe's (Carelton Place, ON) slot shot bounced out to Sydney Odiwichuk (Winnipeg, MB) who put it into the back of the net.

After dangerous chances by Dalhousie, Weist cut into the lead when she went on a breakaway, and put the puck past McDonald.

After Alisha Donavon was stopped point blank, not once, but twice, Asham powered home her second of the night, both on the power play.

Dalhousie cut the lead to two, when Weist dove to pounce on a rebound for her second of the night after the pure chaos in front of McDonald.

With 2 minutes remaining, and the Tigers in dire need of a goal, Weist once again stepped up when she found Emma Penner (Niagara on the Lake, ON) for a tap in goal, and on the next shift Dalhousie went on a power play.

With their net empty, and on a man advantage, Dalhousie could not get the puck past McDonald, and Mount Allison escaped with a 4-3 win.

Both teams will play again on Wednesday with DAL facing STFX and MTA welcoming UPEI to Sackville.
