Mounties tame Tigers in shootout

Mounties tame Tigers in shootout

(SACKVILLE, NB) In what was the first of two games during senior weekend, the Mounties welcomed Dalhousie in AUS women's hockey action. The game would need extra time and a shootout with Mount Allison pulling away with the 2-1 win.

Both teams came out flying as they exchanged opportunities in the first frame. The excitement from the players was palpable and translated into a couple of powerplay chances, but neither team could muster a quality chance to beat the opposing goalie. After 20 minutes, Dalhousie would hold a slight lead in shots with 12 to 11.

The Tigers would get the game's first goal early in the second period as Isabella Weist (Torbay, NL) took the pass from her teammate Lexie Small (Grand Falls, NL) in the slot and redirected a slick forehand in the top left corner. Mount Allison would answer shortly after off a two-on-one from a bank pass inside their own end that found the stick of Chelsea Krahenbil (Winnipeg, MB) who skated the length of the ice and roofed it short side for her fifth of the season.

Both teams came out hungry in the third period but could not beat the stellar play of Dalhousie's Maggie Baxter (Mahone Bay, NS) and Mount Allison's Hanna Pagdato (Winnipeg, MB). The goalies would put on a show finishing with 33 and 43 saves, respectively. Pagdato would be awarded with the Player of the Game after her strong performance.

The Mounties were unsuccessful on a late powerplay in the third period as this game went into overtime. Dalhousie's best penalty killer of the evening Baxter would stop four saves in the extra frame and send this game to a shootout.

After the first five skaters were unsuccessful, Hailey Simoneau (Milton, ON) stepped up and tucked one over the right pad of Baxter to give the Mounties their second win on the season.

Mount Allison (2-14-2-1) will look to host StFX tomorrow night in Sackville for their second and final game of the weekend.

Dalhousie (10-9-0-1) for their part will host Moncton in Halifax tomorrow night, puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
