(Halifax, NS) - The UNB Reds came away from the Halifax forum with a 4-2 win over the Dalhousie Tiger on October 28, 2023.
Dalhousie's starting goalie Grace Beer (Oakville, ON) was forced to be sharp early, covering up a point blank shot by Rhylee Strohm (Kingsville, ON) at the side of the net.
The Tigers struck gold first.
Off a point shot that bounced off multiple sticks, and created chaos for a moment in front of Reds goalie Cassie McCalllum (Rothesay, NB), Emma Bishop (Bedford, NS) pounced on a loose puck and trickled it into the back of the net.
Dalhousie went on the power play with nine minutes remaining in the period, but MacCallum, and the Reds' penalty kill unit stood up to the task and kept it at a 1-0 lead, including MacCallum making a crucial stop on a three on one.
At the end of the first period of play, the Tigers were up 1-0.
The action started immediately with Lillian George (Nipissing First Nation) having a chance to tie the game all alone in the slot, but the forward missed wide right.
The Tigers on their short powerplay nearly scored the second of the game, but hit the post, and it was so close the goal light went off.
UNB answered right back.
Robyn Brokenshier (St. Albert, AB) found Hailey Jackson (Delburne, AB) in the slot from behind the net, which Beer answered, but Sydney Oitomen (Missisauga, ON) was able to find the rebound and put it past a diving Beer.
They kept the pressure on, and almost scored the tie breaker on a two on one where Peyton Hargreaves (Whitby, ON) worked her way to be all alone, but the short side post stood in the way.
That concluded the second period and the two teams went into the second intermission dead even.
To start the new period, DAL instantly took the lead off of a pass out front from Eustace to Brooklyn Paisley (Shawnigan Lake, BC)who netted her third goal of the season to put the Tigers on top.
Dalhousie kept momentum and went on two separate power plays looking to build some insurance to their newfound lead, but they were unsuccessful on each.
UNB eventually evened the game at the 10th minute on a point shot from Brokenshire that got through a screen to beat Beer top corner.
They would shortly take the lead off of Lauren Carter (Milton,ON) tipping a pass from Mackenzie Keenan (Midhurst, ON), and squeaking it past the Dalhousie goaltender short side.
The Reds would be put on the powerplay with two minutes to play, and Jackson would put in the empty netter as time expired, and that put away the game 4-2.
The Tigers will go on the road to play Mount Allison on Friday 3rd, and UNB will travel to St. Thomas to take on the Tommies on Wednesday the first.
