Three-goal second period helps Dal top St. Thomas 4-2

(Halifax, N.S.) – The Dalhousie Tigers (6-13-1) used a three-goal second period to come from behind and top the St. Thomas Tommies (15-3-2) 4-2 on Friday night at the Halifax Forum.

The first period was closely contested, with the Tommies recording the only goal just over five minutes in on the powerplay.

Defenceman Jessie McCann (Grand Bay, NB) was able to find the back of the net off of a deflected shot to open the scoring.

The Tigers had a few quality chances, their best coming with six minutes left as forward Taylor Reichheld (Hagersville, ON) fired a spinning shot from in tight, however it was turned away by St. Thomas goaltender Taylor Cook (Brantford, ON) to preserve the one-goal lead for the visitors.

Dalhousie erupted in the second period, taking a 3-2 lead into the final 20 minutes.

The hosts evened the contest quickly in the middle frame, scoring just 17 seconds in courtesy of forward Jessie Rietveld (Pelham, ON, who was able to tap a bouncing puck past Cook to tie the game.

St. Thomas was able to retake the lead at 11:56 though, as forward Becky Conner (East St. Paul, MB) cruised into the Tigers zone and tucked the puck behind Dalhousie goaltender Fabiana Petricca (Woodbridge, ON).

Dalhousie would tie the game up yet again with just under four minutes to play, as forward Lisa Maclean (Inverness, NS) released a diving shot that beat Cook.

The Tigers would take their first lead of the game just over a minute later, courtesy of Reichheld on an unassisted goal.

The Tommies had a great chance to even the score with a minute-and-a-half to play, as McCann rushed in on a breakaway but was denied by Petricca, who preserved Dalhousie's one-goal lead.

St. Thomas were the aggressors in the final 20 minutes of play, however it was the Tigers who scored the only goal to ice the contest, as forward Danika Phillips (Barrie, ON) snuck a puck past the blocker of Cook to preserve the Dalhousie victory.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow, as Dalhousie hosts UPEI while St. Thomas travels to face Mount Allison.
