Huskies top Tigers 1-0 with late third period goal

(Halifax, N.S.) – A late third period goal by blue-liner Hannah Askin (Waterloo, ON) was the difference on Sunday afternoon at the Halifax Forum as the Saint Mary's Huskies downed their cross-town rival Dalhousie Tigers 1-0.

Askin's goal came with just 1:55 left to go in the game, in a contest where the Huskies outshot the Tigers 33-14.

Saint Mary's peppered the Tigers with 13 shots in the opening frame, compared to just three for Dalhousie, however goaltender Fabiana Petricca (Woodbridge, ON) stood her ground to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.

Despite getting outshot heavily in the middle frame as well, the Tigers stood their ground and had the best opportunity of the period to break the deadlock.

Forward Lisa Maclean (Inverness, NS) broke past her defender at 2:47 and placed an excellent backhand shot on net, but Huskies goaltender Rebecca Clark (Keswick, ON) was right there to keep the game scoreless.

The third period was more of a defensive battle, with just 11 combined shots on net.

Askin would ultimately pot the game winner, after a back-and-forth battle in the games closing minutes.

With the win, Saint Mary's advanced to 9-1-1, while Dalhousie fell to 2-9-1. Both teams will go on the road this week, as the Huskies will battle StFX on Wednesday, while the Tigers will take on UPEI on Saturday.
