Tigers win 3-2 in exhibition debut against StFX

The Tigers women's hockey team came out on top Friday, September 23 against the St. FX X-Women. Held in Liverpool, N.S. the game was an excellent pre-season bout and resulted in an exhilarating shootout finish.

Fifth year veteran goaltender Mati Barrett got the start for the Tigers playing all 60 minutes and stopping a total of 18 shots. The Tigers power play unit was tested early in the period when X-Women player Brooke Noseworthy was penalized for hooking just a few minutes into the game. The power play unit displayed some excellent puck moving skills but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. With just under three minutes to go, the Tigers opened the scoring and took a 1-0 lead with a goal by Ashley Money. This even strength goal was assisted by both Rachel Carr and Danika Phillips.

The Tigers notched another tally when Jesse Rietveld potted her first of the preseason just under the halfway mark of the second period. The helpers went to Rachel Carr and Corinne Desjardins – Carr's second assist of the night. It wasn't until eight minutes left when X-Women player Kara Power put the team on the score board. The result of this goal would make the score 2-1 for the Tigers heading into the third period

The third period showcased some remarkable end to end action as both teams battled for a chance to get a "W" in the exhibition game column. However, X-Women's Emily Power ended up tying the game at 15:21 on a power play opportunity. The final five minutes of the game resulted in no scoring, ultimately calling for a shootout.

After several rounds of the shootout, Jesse Rietveld was the final shooter for the Tigers who capitalized on her opportunity. This goal gave the Tigers a 3-2 win and recorded their first pre-season win as the 2016-17 women's hockey team.

The next Tigers game is Friday, September 30th at UPEI. Puck drop is 7:00 pm.
