(Charlottetown, PE) – UPEI maintained constant pressure on Dalhousie throughout the game to top the Tigers 5-0 in front of 100 fans at MacLauchlan Arena in Charlottetown on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 6-8-3 on the season and sit in fifth place in the AUS, while the Tigers fall to 6-11-0 and sit sixth in the conference standings.
On a day when three UPEI seniors were honoured for their time with the team, they got goals from 5 different players in the win. The Panthers got two-point games from Sam Sweet (1 goal, 1 assist), Keirstin Visser (1 goal, 1 assist), and Laura Bradley (2 assists) to go along with a 22 save shutout from Marie-Soleil Deschenes.
Kiana Strand (Invermere, BC) scored first for UPEI with less than 2 minutes remaining in the first period. Cassidy McCabe (Charlottetown, PE) and Bria Harding (Plaster Rock, NB) assisted the goal, which was the only score in the first period. UPEI outshot Dalhouse 11-6 in the period.
In the second period, Emma Weatherbie (Charlottetown, PE) scored early on a pass from Ferran Brown (Calgary, AB). 12 minutes into the period, the Panthers got their third goal of the game from Sam Sweet (O'Leary, PE) on the power play. Assists went to Keirstin Visser (Crapaud, PE) and Maggie Grimmer (Charlottetown, PE) on the goal. UPEI led the shots in the second period 12-5.
In the third, UPEI kept coming with 2 power play goals in the first 8 minutes of the period. Visser scored first with assists going to Lindsay Johnston (Bowmanville, ON) and Laura Bradley (St. Teresa, PE). Jessie Howard (Kingston, ON) scored the second goal with assists going to Bradley and Sweet. The shots in the third period were 11-8 in favour of Dalhousie.
Marie-Soleil Deschenes (Île-Perrot, QC) stopped each of the 22 shots she faced in the game, while Jessica Severeyns (Hammonds Plains, NS) saved 24 of the 29 shots she faced and Jeanne Morin (Les Gets, France) saved both shots she faced in her 7 minutes on the ice.
Deschenes was named AUS Subway player of the game for the Panthers.
UPEI is at home again Sunday against Mount Allison (4-12-1) at 7:00.
Dalhousie is playing host to Moncton (13-3-1) on Sunday at the Halifax Forum at 6:30.
