Covert commits to Tigers for 2023-24

Dalhousie Tigers track and field head coach Rich Lehman is pleased to announce the commitment of Claire Covert for the 2023-24 season.

A multi-eventer, Covert competes for Athletics East and Halifax West High School.

Covert brought home the U18 silver medal in pentathlon from the Athletics Canada Indoor National Championship in 2022 and won a gold medal at the 2022 Athletics Nova Scotia Outdoor Provincial Championship in the heptathlon last June.

At the 2022 School Sport Nova Scotia Track and Field Championships, Covert won the 100m hurdles and set a new Halifax West record in the process. She was named the team MVP in 2021-22 for her efforts. Covert repeated as the MVP in 2022-23 after winning a bronze medal in long jump at the 2023 edition of the provincial championships.

Covert will be following in her mother’s footsteps. Angela Weeks was a member of the Dalhousie track and field team in the early 90’s.

“I choose Dal because of my interest in the integrated science program and because of the amazing coaches,” says Covert. “I am super excited to grow as an athlete and be a part of such a talented team!”

Covert will be in the integrated sciences program at Dalhousie and plans on majoring in biochemistry.

“We're excited to add Claire to our combined events program,” says Lehman. “She is an excellent all-around athlete who will compete for medals at the AUS level immediately. I believe she has long term national level potential in both the pentathlon and individual high jump.”

The women’s track and field team won a record-setting 32nd AUS title last season, the longest consecutive conference title streak known in U SPORTS.
