First Year Feature: Mia Stein-Blumberg
We'd like to introduce you to first year women's swimmer, Mia Stein-Blumberg!
The transition from high school to university athletics is significant. We’re highlighting first year athletes from all varsity teams this season who are on the path to achieving greatness here at Dalhousie University.
This week we would like to introduce Mia Stein-Blumberg, a first year swimmer on the women's swim team. Hailing from Toronto, Stein-Blumberg is studying arts and social sciences.
How long have you been swimming?
I have been swimming for 10 years.
Did you play any other sports growing up?
I attempted gymnastics - unfortunately flying through the air terrifies me.
Who is somebody in the swim community you admired growing up and why?
Sarah Sjöström - she is unlike anyone else. The way that she has been untouchable for so many years and is still breaking world records in her 30s is not only incredibly inspiring, but has also redefined what is possible in the sport of swimming.
What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?
Hearing my mum scream from the stands when I finally made my Olympic Trials cut.
What made you choose Dalhousie University?
It is away from home without being too far, and I’ve always wanted to live by the ocean. But above all - the people. There is a certain kindness here that isn’t replicated anywhere else.
Did any of your family members attend Dalhousie University?
I have a couple of cousins here currently.
How has the transition from high school sports to university sports been for you so far?
Age group swimming is solely focused on individual performance, whilst University swimming is heavily focused on the performance of the entire team. This makes for the most incredible support during practices and competitions - everyone is each other’s biggest fan. This has made the transition into university swimming the most positive experience of my life.
How do you balance academics and sports?
Being able to tailor my classes to my practice schedule makes it so that I’m in class at times that work best for me and my energy level. (Also, daily naps are a must for me. They keep my energy and motivation up during intense training blocks.)
What are some of your interests outside of sports?
I love to read and bake - chocolate chip cookies are the easiest way to turn a bad day into a good one.
Any pre-event superstitions/routines?
Jump three times in the air, adjust the block three times, and slam my foot into the wedge for three seconds.
Any hidden talents?
I can name every country in the world
