Tigers swim to victory at Kemp-Fry Meet

The Dalhousie Tigers men's and women's swim teams swam to victory in 15 of 18 events on day three of the 2021 Kemp-Fry Invitational Swim Meet.

Memorial's Heidi Perry kicked things off on the third and final day of competitions, winning the 200m butterfly event. Dalhousie's Chloe Paul-Chowdhury was second followed by fellow Tiger Caitlyn Taylor in third.

Frederick Chandler-Baas won the men's 200m butterfly event, followed closely by Acadia's Shane Kenny and Memorial's Reilly Swain in second and third, respectively.

Dalhousie's Abbey Corish was the first to the wall in the 50m breaststroke final, with teammate Victoria MacDonald touching in behind her in second. Acadia's Kali Lancaster was third.

Adam Bouma improved upon his U SPORTS-qualifying time in the heats to win the men's 50m breaststroke to give Dalhousie their third event win of the evening. He swam a 28.83 with Acadia's Gordon Shortt touching in with his own national-qualifying time of 28.87 to finish second. Memorial's Cormac Bull was third.

Tigers swimmer Martine Nyhof claimed victory in the 100m freestyle, qualifying for the national championships with a time of 56.77. She was followed by Acadia's Grace Earl and Dalhousie's Elaine Gentleman who finished in second and third.

Noah Mascoll-Gomes won the men's 100m freestyle lowering his time from the heats by almost a second, becoming Dalhousie's sixth event winner with a U SPORTS-qualifying time of 49.76. Acadia's Dean Sangster was second, followed by Dalhousie's Benjamin Rafales-Nordoff in third.

In the women's 200m IM, it was Dalhousie swimmer Emilie Schofield who won the event, followed by teammate Madeline Shivgulam in second and Memorial's Ashlen Mersereau in third.

Memorial's Matty Whelan won the men's 200m IM, with Dalhousie's Noah Brake and Acadia's Elyott Chang touching in at second and third, respectively.

Dalhousie's Martine Nyhof was the first to the wall in the women's 100m backstroke with a U SPORTS-qualifying time of 1:03.30. Axewoman Jessica Pelletier was second, followed by Memorial's Kate Williams in third.

Christian Payne (DAL) earned his spot at the national championships, posting a time of 53.88 in the men's 100m backstroke. Acadia's Dean Sangster placed second with Dalhousie's Liam Ferguson in third.

It was Tigers swimmer Victoria MacDonald who won the women's 200m breaststroke with Kali Lancaster (ACA) and Dalhousie's Emilie Schofield placing second and third respectively. In the men's event, Dal's Adam Bouma won his second event of the night, with Acadia's Gordon Shortt and Dalhousie's Gregor Deveau following in second and third, respectively.

Dalhousie claimed the top two spots in the women's 50m butterfly with Lauren Mosher out-touching Veronica Hollick. Acadia's Kassidy Hamilton was third.

Acadia's Shane Kenny set a new AUS record on his way to win the men's 50m butterfly. He posted a U SPORTS-qualifying time of 24.44. Dalhousie's Christian Payne and Liam Ferguson were second and third, respectively.

Dalhousie's Reagan Crowell shaved nearly five seconds off her preliminary swim to win the 400m freestyle event. She posted a U SPORTS-qualifying time of 4:20.69 and led a Tigers top-three sweep with Abbey Nichols and Amelia Lane finishing in second and third.

Logan Sparkes followed suit for the Tigers winning the men's 400m freestyle in a national-qualifying time of 3:55.65. Fellow Tiger Noah Mascoll-Gomes was second, followed by Memorial's Matty Whelan.

The Dalhousie team of Martine Nyhof, Abbey Corish, Veronica Hollick and Regan Crowell won the women's 400m medley relay. Memorial's team of Kate Williams, Marcy Whelan, Heidi Perry and Kathryn Stokes was second, followed by UNB's Susana Somerton, Nikki Connors, Isabelle Stewart and Alexie Sanford was third.

The Tigers also won the men's 400m medley relay. Christian Payne, Adam Bouma, Frederick Chandler-Baas and Noah Mascoll-Gomes put up a U SPORTS-qualifying time of 3:44.04. Acadia's Dean Sangster, Gordon Shortt, Shane Kenny and Bo Stokesbury-Price placed second, followed by the Memorial team of Ruben Rivero, Aaron Coady, Cormac Bull and Matty Whelan was third.

At the end of the meet, the Tigers claimed victory in both the men's and women's team finals. Competition resumes after the holidays with the AUS invitational January 15 & 16, hosted by Dalhousie.
