First Year Feature: Matthew McCarvell
We'd like to introduce you to first year men's volleyball player, Matthew McCarvell!
The transition from high school to university athletics is significant. We’re highlighting first year athletes from all varsity teams this season who are on the path to achieving greatness here at Dalhousie University.
This week we would like to introduce Matthew McCarvell, a first year middle on the men's volleyball team. Hailing from Toronto, McCarvell is studying commerce.
How long have you been playing volleyball?
7 years
Did you play any other sports growing up?
I played hockey, basketball, soccer, and baseball.
Who is somebody in the volleyball community you admired growing up and why?
Wilfredo Leon, because he has one of the fastest serves recorded in competition.
What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?
Winning the Canadian national championship twice.
What made you choose Dalhousie University?
During my recruitment process, I was fortunate enough to experience many Canadian campuses and environments. I chose Dalhousie because of the amazing facilities that would accelerate my academic and athletic learning. As well the Dalhousie Men’s Volleyball team and staff were made up of very nice and respectable people and I was compelled by this amazing environment.
Did any of your family members attend Dalhousie University?
My grandfather attended Dalhousie and studied Law in a graduate program.
How has the transition from high school sports to university sports been for you so far?
The transition has been slightly challenging as I am not used to seeing this kind of competition. Overall, the experience has been like no other and I am enjoying the time I am spending with my team and growing as an individual.
How do you balance academics and sports?
For me, I am lucky as my athletic schedule is usually consistent throughout most weeks. Therefore, I dedicate the time I have between practices and classes to studying and personal time. On weeks when we travel, I spend most of my downtime on academics.
What are some of your interests outside of sports?
I like music, movies, cooking, and art.
Any pre-event superstitions/routines?
Every night before a match, I read a poem from a book called The Prophet by Khalil Gibran, which was recommended to me by a friend. As well, before any game, I MUST listen to “The Great Gig in The Sky” by Pink Floyd.
Any hidden talents?
I can play 7 instruments.
