UNB snap Tigers winning streak, win 3-0 at Dalplex

Today the Dalhousie Tigers learned that no team is perfect, including themselves.

The once undefeated Tigers fell today in an afternoon affair against the rival UNB Varsity Reds 3-0. The Varsity Reds showed no mercy, and although every set was a battle to the end, it was the Varsity Reds who came out on top each time. It was a gritty battle fought by two strong teams.

In the first set, Connor Maessen and Alex Dempsey came up with a huge block on Eivind Anderson on the very first point that pumped up the Tigers. After trading leads and making the game 4-4, UNB went on a 6-1 run to make it 10-5.

The Tigers battled back, and after an Eivind Andersen ball sailed out of bounds the score was again tied at 14.

The Varsity Reds got up 23-21, and then two consecutive errors by Kristen O'Brien and Jonathan MacDonald gave the Varsity Reds the 25-21 victory.

The game intensified in the second set and neither team held a lead greater than two until UNB pulled away late, gaining a 23-17 edge on an ace by Jordan Bruce. Julio Fernandez and Mattieu Losier had consecutive kills at the end of the set to give UNB the 25-19 victory.

Dalhousie was now in an unfamiliar situation: on the brink of defeat. UNB desperately wanted to put away their long-time rivals and wasted no time in doing so, jumping out to a 7-3 leady early. Dan Ota had seen enough and quickly called a timeout.

The timeout couldn't stop the Varsity Red's momentum, and broke out to a 10-5 lead. The Tigers looked like they were about to turn the tables with a 7-2, spurred by Jonathan MacDonald's service ace.

A thunderous kill by UNB's Julio Fernandez ended the game emphatically 25-23. Fernandez paced the Varsity Reds with 14 kills and 15 points and was on the Tigers' radar all game long.

Kristen O'Brien and Connor Maessen led the way for the Tigers with nine kills apiece and Bryan Duquette and Alex Dempsey added four each.
