SMU scored four goals in the third, six goals in total, to defeat Dalhousie 6-2 in their home opener.
The first period was intense with both teams scoring one goal a piece. The Huskies controlled most of the play, spending more time on the puck and creating more scoring opportunities.
Dalhousie's Jarett Baker (Black Rock, NS) scored the game's first goal, six minutes into the contest, with a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle.
Thirty-four seconds later SMU equalised. SMU's Will Chisholm (Lunenburg, NS) scored a contested rebound shot. Dalhousie's goalie Robbie Forbes (Oakville, ON) lost his stick just before the goal.
The Huskies wrapped up the first period with 30 shots on net compared to the Tigers seven. Dalhousie's Robbie Forbes (Oakville, ON) kept the Tigers in the game by stopping twenty-nine attempts.
In the second period, the Huskies quickly grew their lead with a goal twenty four seconds in. SMU Charlie Da Fonseca (Thornhill, ON) scored the fast-break goal by going five-hole on the goalie.
Minutes later, SMU's Derek Gentile (Sydney, NS) stretched the lead to two by scoring off of a two-on-one fastbreak.
Controversy arose when Dalhousie seemingly scored, but milliseconds prior the ref blew the whistle, leading to confusion.
Dalhousie was able to regain the point with three minutes remaining, shrinking the lead to one. Alec Belanger (Quebec, PQ) scored for the Tigers.
In the third period, the Huskies outplayed the Tigers, expanding their lead to four goals. Goals from Saint Mary's Dennis Busby (Oro-Medonte, ON), Ben Allison (Halifax, NS), and Reid Valade (Caledon, ON) were the punctuation for Saint Mary's.
SMU defeated the Tigers in a dominant performance. The Huskies had fifty-four shots to Dalhousie's twenty-five.
Gentile was awarded player of the game with one goal and two assists.
The Tigers head to Wolfville to face off versus Acadia Saturday at 7:00 pm ADT. The Huskies return to the Homberg Centre next Friday to face the Aigles Bleus.
