Dalhousie Tigers men’s basketball head coach Rick Plato is pleased to announce the commitment of Ausitn Thomson for the 2024-25 season.
Hailing from Newmarket, Ontario, Thomson plays for CALI Prep Academy in Pickering, Ontario. During this past season with CALI Prep Academy, the 6’10 forward averaged 12.6 points per game and 11.6 rebounds per game. Thomson and his teammates won the North Pole Hoops national championship in 2024, the 2024 Big Shots National in South Carolina and the Humber Classic in 2023. In 2023 they were also the Platinum Circuit champions.
Named a North Pole Hoops D1 MVP and first team all-star, Thomson was also named an all-star and championship player of the game at the Humber Classic in 2024.
“I chose the Tigers because of the outstanding basketball and academic programs and the environment they have built around them,” says Thomson. “I believe Dalhousie will develop me and give me the needed resources to succeed athletically, academically, and off the court. I am very excited to be attending Dalhousie this upcoming season, joining an amazing coaching staff and team, I am ready to come in and compete right away.”
A multi-year member of the honour roll, Thomson will be studying kinesiology at Dalhousie.
“Austin is a versatile player who is a physical presence on the court, a true rim protector and has the ability to finish with both hands inside,” says Plato. “What I really like about Austin is that he is an aggressive ‘big’ who effectively uses his body and will give us an imposing force inside. Austin’s abilities will complement the depth of our young forwards who did a solid job at both ends of the court last season. Austin will be a significant addition to our line up, will help solidify our interior defense, and give the Tigers a nice boost with our rebounding.”
The Tigers won their seventh AUS title in 10 years last season and finished fourth on the national stage. They open their title defence on October 30 in a re-match of last season’s AUS final versus STFX.
