The 2023 Rod & Joan Shoveller Memorial Basketball Tournament, presented by CBCL, takes place on Dec. 28-31, 2023, at Dalplex.
The men’s basketball tournament remembers Rod and Joan Shoveller. Rod, a special events coordinator for Dal, and Joan, a long-time Black & Gold member, were instrumental figures in Nova Scotia basketball. More on the two can be found here.
The tournament starts with the Cape Breton Capers and Calgary Dinos on Thursday, Dec. 28, at 6pm.
The Tigers first play St. Clair on Dec. 29 at 8pm.
Dalhousie will be looking to make the U SPORTS top 10 rankings for the first time since the Nov. 14-20 rankings were released. This tournament gives Dal a chance to beat out-of-province teams and get rolling into the new semester.
Dal currently sits two points back of the first-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks. The tournament can help the Tigers players get their legs under them.
“It gets us up to game speed a lot faster than those teams that aren't playing,” says Dal Head Coach Rick Plato.
The Tigers will play another two games, one against Calgary on Saturday at 8pm and the other against Brock on Sunday at 1pm.
