Sooley commits to Tigers for 2020-21 season

Dalhousie Tigers men’s basketball head coach Rick Plato is pleased to announce the commitment of Caleb Sooley for the 2020-21 season.

Sooley is a multi-year captain of his Rothesay Netherwood School (RNS) boys basketball team. He and his teammates went undefeated in the 2019-20 National Preparatory Association League. They were headed to the national championship March 25-28 as the No. 1 seed, but the tournament was cancelled due to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) worldwide pandemic. Last week, Sooley was awarded the inaugural Andrew Milner Leadership Award at the NPA’s virtual award ceremony. The award recognizes graduating athletes who show exceptional leadership skills and who sacrifice personal gain for the betterment of the team.

A 6’5 shooting guard, Sooley was named to and captained, Team Newfoundland’s 2017 Canada Summer Games boys basketball team.

A native of Mount Pearl, Nlfd., Sooley is a three-time recipient of the Newfoundland Premier’s Athletic Award, and excels in the classroom, earning honour roll status each year of his high school career.

“I am very excited about starting my next chapter with the Dalhousie Tigers,” says Sooley. “I am excited to further develop under Coach Plato and contribute to his prestigious program.”

Sooley will be studying business management while attending Dalhousie.

“Caleb is a solid, hard-working young man who has developed nicely in his time at Rothesay Netherwood School under the tutelage of Coach Damian Gay,” says Plato. “He is a knock down 3-point shooter who will be counted on to add strength to the Tigers perimeter offence. He has tremendous upside and is a solid addition to the roster for 2020-21.”

The Tigers finished their season with a record of 19-1 in the regular season before capturing the AUS title and a U SPORTS silver medal.
