Capers beat Tigers 77-71

(SYDNEY, N.S.)-The Cape Breton University Capers picked up back-to-back wins at Sullivan Fieldhouse this weekend against the Dalhousie Tigers. After a 91-64 win on Friday night, the Capers edged the Tigers 77-71 in Saturday afternoon's re-match.

The Tigers had a hard time stopping Capers' big man Meschack Lufile, who had 18 points and nine rebounds in the victory. Kayon Mayers provided a spark off the bench for CBU, and earned Player of the Game with 13 points and six assists.

Akeem Isaac-Phillip and Sean McCormick both made contributions for Cape Breton as well. Isaac-Phillip had nine points, while McCormick had eight points and 10 rebounds, including some big offensive boards in the fourth quarter.

Kashrell Lawrence kept the Tigers in the game throughout, scoring some tough buckets with Lufile in his face.  Lawrence had a game-high 27 points on 11 of 17 shooting to go along with nine rebounds in the loss. Ritchie Kanza-Mata was the other major contributor for the Tigers, with 11 points and six assists in the contest.

The Capers were in control in the first half and took a sizable lead into halftime. Cape Breton remained in control and led by as many as 15. In the fourth quarter, Dalhousie forced some Caper turnovers and fought their way back into the game, but it was too little, too late.

The win improved the Capers' record at Sullivan Fieldhouse to 8-1 and their overall record to 9-8, which is good for fourth place in the AUS. The Tigers dropped to 8-8 with the loss, but still sit two points ahead of the Capers in the AUS standings.

CBU will play their final game at Sullivan Fieldhouse this season next Saturday at 8 p.m. on Valentine's Day, where they would love to show some heart and pick up a win over Saint Mary's. Dalhousie will travel to StFX on Tuesday to play the X-Men at 8 p.m. in a four-point game.
