(HALIFAX, N.S.)-- Brian Rouse's hot hand gave the SMU Huskies a boost Saturday afternoon in their 79-63 men's AUS basketball win.
The Mississauga, Ontario native led all scorers with 23 points and his efforts collected five steals for the Huskies, who gain four points in the standings with the win.
Saint Mary's improves to 7-6 on the year (18 points) and sits in fifth place, two points behind Dal (7-6) and Cape Breton University (7-8) who are tied for third place, each with 20 points.
SMU opened a fast 24-11 first quarter lead on 8-15 shooting from the floor compared to Dal's 2-16. The Tigers outscored SMU 18-13 in the second frame to trim the Huskies lead to eight, 37-29 at half.
The Huskies nearly doubled up Dalhouse in the third quarter, 19-10 and stretched their lead to 17 points after thirty minutes.
A torrid final 10 minutes produced a 28-23 frame for Dal as SMU won 79-63.
Jarred Reid (Aurora, ON) paced Dal with 17 points and Cedric Sanogo (Montreal, QC) added 13 points. Halifax's Steven Stammberger contributed a double-double for Dal with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Also scoring for the Huskies Saturday afternoon were Jeremy McAvoy (Dartmouth, NS) with 17 points, Marquis Clayton (Halifax, NS) and Osman Barrie (Ottawa, ON) had 13 points each while Achuil Lual (Ottawa, ON) had six points and hauled 17 rebounds in the win.
Toronto's Ryan Augustine had three points for Saint Mary's, teammates Aaron Fisher (Savannah, Georgia) and Kemar Alleyne (Scarborough, ON) had two points each and Brent Martindale (Kingston, ON) pulled down a rebound for SMU.
Saint Mary's travels to St. FX (4-9, 10 points) February 3 for a 8pm tip-off while Dalhousie hosts Acadia on Tuesday at 8pm.
