StFX go the distance, defeat Tigers 76-72 in overtime
The StFX X-Men handed the Dalhousie Tigers yet another crushing defeat, this time in overtime as they were the ones who came out on top in a game with 18 lead changes. The Tigers drop to 2-8 with the loss.
In truly one of the most exciting games of the 2013-2014 AUS season, Will Donkoh led the charge with 20 points and seven assists.
Simon Marr had a game-high 24 points in the loss for the Tigers.
The Tigers started the game with tough defensive intensity, with John Traboulsi pressuring Jameel Williamson to pass the ball right to the waiting hands of Devon Stedman.
The Tigers led 17-14 after the first ten minutes of play. Nathan Smith came off the bench and added an offensive punch with four quick points in the quarter.
Davonte Provo hit a huge three right in Ritchie Kanza Mata's face to tie the game at 22 with 7:30 left in the quarter, and Kanza Mata answered right back with a freethrow line jumper as the shot clock expired.
Kanza Mata added a three on the next possession to bring the Tigers lead back up to five, but Provo answered with a floater.
The Tigers held a slim 31-30 lead at half.
Both teams struggled to score as the defensive intensity ramped up, and it set the stage for a crazy final five minutes.
Simon Marr hit the first of his four threes with 4:40 left to tie the game at 59, sending the crowd to their feet. The teams went back and forth for the next few minutes.
Marr hit another three with 1:16 left to give the Tigers a 63-62 lead, and then hit yet another with 45 seconds to tie the game again.
Jordan Clarke hit a jumper right in Traboulsi's face to give the X-Women a 67-64 lead with 20 seconds left.
The crowd dropped silent as the foul shot clanged around the rim and fell into the hand of StFX, who drove up the court, but a costly turnover with 0.1 left on the clock meant one thing.
It was headed to overtime.
Traboulsi got things going with a layup right away, but it was the X-Men who took over in overtime and Shane Coupeland dropped two free throws in the final seconds to ice the game for the X-Men, who went on to win 76-72.
Ritchie Kanza Mata and Will Donkoh were named the Subway players of the game.
