Quirion lead UNB over Dalhousie in season opener 75-62

Daniel Quirion had 32 points and 6 rebounds as the UNB Varsity Reds looked to prove that they're not going to settle for another seventh place finish this year in the AUS. Rick Plato's CIS regular season coaching debut didn't go as planned and the Tigers dropped their first game of the season 75-62.

Quiriron and first-year Javon Masters scored 19 of UNB's 22 points in the first half and the Varsity Reds led the Tigers 22-14 after the first quarter. Quirion went 3-3 from the three point line and Dalhousie's perimeter defense struggled contain the outside shot.

The Tigers offense looked disjointed all night and the Tigers couldn't seem to string together consecutive offensive sets. The Tigers had 22 turnovers on the night and gave away multiple easy buckets.

In the second quarter, the Tigers defense tightened up and UNB drew multiple fouls, putting Dal on the free throw line. The Tigers capitalized, but still trailed 36-31 at the half.

Going into the third quarter, the Tigers came out looking to gain the lead. Kashrell Lawrence had six points and three rebound in the quarter and the Tigers led 52-51 going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, the Varsity Reds turned on the jets and put the game away, and the Tigers couldn't seem to get anything going offensively, getting outscored 24-9.

Devon Stedman led the Tigers with 13 points and 9 rebounds.

The teams meet again tomorrow at the Dalplex at 4:00pm.
