Huskies defeat rival Tigers 87-67

The battle of Halifax hoops saw its latest chapter unfold as the Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 87-67 in men's basketball action on Sunday at the Dalplex.

Halifax native Marquis Clayton led the way for the Huskies, dropping 20 points on 9-13 shooting and adding 9 assists.

Kashrell Lawrence came off the bench and had a game-high 23 points and 6 rebounds in a losing effort for the Tigers.

The first quarter saw back and forth play with multiple turnovers. Both teams had trouble handling the ball and Dalhousie and Saint Mary's committed 16 and 11 turnovers respectively. The Huskies led the Tigers 19-15 after the first quarter.

The second quarter was a different story and the Huskies defense smothered the Tigers, forcing two quick turnovers to start. Their offense was also firing on all cylinders, capitalizing on multiple fast breaks. Former StFX X-Men Terrence Taylor was a force for the Huskies and got multiple wide open looks in the paint and finished with nine points.

The Huskies outscored the Tigers 30-16 in the quarter and led 49-31 at half.

The Huskies continued their fast-paced style in the second half and continued to expose the Tigers defense in transition. The Huskies led the whole way and never let up, limiting the last year's Tigers MVP Simon Marr to only three points on 1-7 shooting.

Marr had a key steal with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter that led to a basket which cut the lead to 13, but a quick three by Husky Riley Halpin and an ally-oop by Harry Ezenibe pushed the lead back to 20.

The Huskies would hold on to take it 87-67. Players of the game were Kashrell Lawrence for the Tigers and Marquis Clayton for the Huskies.
