Tigers claim U SPORTS bronze
The Tigers beat Thompson Rivers 6-5 to capture a U SPORTS bronze medal.
The Tigers women’s curling team won a U SPORTS bronze medal on Friday, beating Thompson Rivers 6-5.
The Tigers went 4-3 in round robin play during the week. They opened the week with a thrilling back-and-forth AUS championship rematch, where the X-Women rallied with a pair in the eighth to tie the game at four, before Tigers skip Ally MacNutt delivered the deciding point in the extra end.
“We played the extra end really great, and I think we just tried to keep it simple and that was working for us,” said MacNutt. “So, we stuck with that (approach) and we were able to pull it out.”
Day two saw the Tigers fall to Regina 6-7 and beat Guelph 8-4. They collected two more wins on day three, beating Thompson Rivers and Lethbridge but struggled on the final day of round robin with losses to Laurier and MacMaster.
Heading into playoffs as the fourth seed, they faced the eventual winners Laurier in the semifinal, falling to the Golden Hawks 9-4.
With a quick turn-around, the rink of Ally MacNutt, Rebecca Regan, Grace McCusker, Cate Fizgerald and alternate Cally Moore, rebounded in the bronze medal game to beat the Wolfpack for the second time this week.
Coach Mary Mattatall was named the women’s Fox 40 Coach of the Year. Skip Ally MacNutt won the R.W. Pugh Fair Play Award.
