Berry appointed student-athlete & community relations advisor

Dalhousie University’s Executive Director of Athletics & Recreation Tim Maloney is pleased to announce Anton Berry as the Tigers student-athlete and community relations advisor and head of basketball operations.

Berry’s work will be multi-faceted and ultimately focused on the ongoing success of Dalhousie’s varsity student-athletes.

“We are pleased to have Anton join our team in this new role that will positively impact our athletic program, campus and surrounding community,” says Maloney. “Strengthening the support mechanisms for our student-athletes along with our relationships with the community while also being more proactive with our equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility initiatives are key objectives that Anton is well positioned to lead.”

As the varsity student-athlete advisor, Berry will have a focus on building and nurturing relationships with key stakeholders across the university to support varsity student-athletes’ academic and health and wellness needs.

He will also act as a community relations advisor and lead the development and implementation of proactive equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility initiatives within Dalhousie’s Department of Athletics and Recreation.

Berry will also serve as the head of basketball operations, working with both the men’s and women’s basketball teams in areas like game preparation, scouting and recruitment. He will also develop and lead all basketball camp-related programming.

“I am excited to transition to this new role,” says Berry. “There is potential for us to have a tremendous impact in the areas of equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility through sport and community. I am looking forward to motivating our student-athletes and advocate for them to ensure their time with us is positive, memorable, and meaningful. I'm eager to showcase the unique and engaging work planned for this space.”

“I also look forward to continuing with both basketball programs here at Dalhousie to work toward achieving competitive excellence.”

The 2021-22 interim head coach of the women’s basketball team, Berry was an assistant coach with the team in 2020-21 and spent seven seasons as an assistant coach with the men’s team, helping lead them to five AUS championship titles and two national medals including a silver in 2019-20. He also helped lead summer camps and academies while with the men’s team.

Originally from Dartmouth, Berry played the 2001-02 season with the Memorial Sea-Hawks before transferring to the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association’s Mount Saint Vincent University where he played three seasons. Berry was also a member of the 2001 Nova Scotia Canada Summer Games men’s basketball team.

A teacher at Dartmouth High School from 2013 to 2020 and their athletic director for five years, Berry coached at Cole Harbour High school from 2011 to 2013. Berry got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant coach from 2007 to 2009 with the Mount Saint Vincent University men’s basketball team under current Tigers men’s basketball head coach Rick Plato and has also worked with the Halifax Community YMCA basketball program and Basketball Nova Scotia’s Canada Games development team. He is currently participating in Sport Nova Scotia’s Black and Indigenous Coach Mentorship program.
