It is with great sadness we announce the passing of long-time Dalhousie women’s field hockey coach, Linda Bonin.

Bonin first assumed the reigns of the team in 2003 after two seasons as an assistant coach and would continue in the role until 2018. She led the Tigers to their first Atlantic University Women’s Field Hockey League (AUWFHL) championship win in 25 years in 2010. In her nearly 20-year career, she helped the Tigers capture five championships, highlighted by a four-year win streak from 2014 to 2017.

“The Tigers Family is deeply saddened by Linda’s passing,” says Dalhousie University’s Executive Director of Athletics and Recreation, Tim Maloney. “Linda was an advocate for sport who made countless contributions to our field hockey program while impacting hundreds of student-athletes at Dalhousie which will leave a lasting legacy.”

A two-time AUWFHL coach of the year, she will be remembered as a fierce competitor who believed in fair and honest competition and abiding by the rules. She was very-well respected by players, coaches and officials alike for her integrity and values both on and off the pitch.

Her passion to inspire had a tremendous impact on the hundreds of student-athletes that played for her. The Linda Bonin Memorial Bursary has been established to continue that passion to assist a deserving female field hockey student-athlete at Dalhousie.
