Student-Athletes shine at AAC Luncheon

Sixty-five student-athletes took to the stage this afternoon to be honoured by parents, coaches, mentors and staff at Dalhousie’s 20^th annual Academic All-Canadian Luncheon, to celebrate their successes on and off the field of play. 

A total of 98 Dalhousie varsity student-athletes achieved U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian status during the 2017-18 school year. To qualify as an Academic All-Canadian, student-athletes must maintain a GPA of at least 3.50, over the academic year while competing in a varsity sport. Hard work, dedication, sacrifice and support are crucial in these students’ lives.  

Dalhousie’s interim president and vice chancellor Peter MacKinnon, applauded Dalhousie’s student-athletes on their discipline and commitment to being successful. “To have 98 Academic All-Canadians in 2017-18 is an outstanding accomplishment. That’s 38% of our student body and it is something we should all take great pride in.” 

Sven Stammberger, a five-year member of the men’s basketball team spoke on behalf of the student-athletes, thanking those who help them achieve success. “There are so many people who have played an integral role in our successes. Our parents’ have provided many different paths for us to follow. Having great teachers and professors like the ones at Dalhousie has helped keep us interested and engaged in our academic endeavours. Our coaches push us every day to be the best we can be as athletes, but they also understand the importance of balancing success on the field of play with success in the classroom.”

Stammberger has been selected as one of U SPORTS Canada’s Top 8 Academic All-Canadians from the 2017-18 season. He along with seven other student-athletes from across Canada will be recognized on January 29 at Rideau Hall in the nation’s capital by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada.

In addition to honouring the student-athletes, the luncheon also applauds the individuals who’ve helped the student-athletes achieve their goals: their academic mentors. Honourees were given the opportunity to invite a faculty member to the reception, someone who had been vital to their success as student-athletes. 

“We always encourage our student-athletes to strive for excellence in the classroom and in sport,” says Tim Maloney, Executive Director, Athletics and Recreation. “To be able to recognize them and the people that have helped them succeed is something we take great pride in.”
