This week’s flashback Friday goes to the 2003-04 women’s track & field team. Back Row (L-R): Alicia Bell, Adrienne Power, Alicia Dobranowski, Lauren Grant, Leanne Huck, Peter Lord (Assistant Coach), Al Yarr (Assistant Coach), Craig Slaunwhite (Assistant Coach) Middle Row (L-R): David Antle (Trainer), Courtney Anderson, Jordan Trainor, Lindsay Jones, Rachel Chudnow, Leanne Maclean, Hilary Burn Front Row (L-R): Dan Hennigar (Head Coach), Katie Campbell, Andrea Farynuik, Jennifer Payne, Natasha Carter, Ellen Vessie, Angie Alambets, Janice Ashworth.

The women’s track and field team was unstoppable in 2003-04. The Tigers took on the top teams in the country in a season that ended with success on the CIS podium. In a year of records, over one-third of the team’s events were smashed this season. The team extended its AUS winning streak to a record fifteen straight years by its largest margin of victory and highest score ever.

The full strength of the Dal program became evident at the AUS Championship held in Moncton, NB. The Tigers were the top performers across event groups winning 15 of 17 events. The Tigers won all the major awards. Leanne Maclean was named athlete of the meet, Adrienne Power won the prestigious track athlete of the year honours, and Jennifer Payne was the AUS field athlete of the year.

Facing the toughest CIS field assembled in more than a decade the Tigers proved once again that their spirit would lead them to success. Adrienne Power demolished her own personal bests and the field every time, taking home double gold in the 60m and 300m and anchoring the 4x200 (with Leanne Huck, Lauren Grant, Katie Campbell) to a silver medal. Janice Ashworth also finished on the podium with a silver medal finish in the 3000m. Jen Payne came through with a bronze in the high jump. In the end the Tigers would finish in third and had amassed 36 points, well ahead of their previous record of 21.

The 2016-17 Dalhousie Tigers men’s and women’s track and field team will compete at the AUS Track and Field Championships February 24-25 at the University of Moncton.
