CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY #5

CIS TOP TEN TUESDAY (#5) Historical rankings for Ottawa rugby, UQAM soccer

Sept. 29, 2015

OTTAWA (CIS) – The Ottawa Gee-Gees women’s rugby team and UQAM Citadins men’s soccer squad reach historical heights in this week’s CIS national rankings as they both merit No. 1 status for the first time in program history.

In other CIS sports, the Laval Rouge et Or (women’s soccer) and Guelph Gryphons (women and men’s cross country) hold on to the pole position.

In women’s rugby, the Gee-Gees (5-0) move up one spot in the new coaches’ poll following a hard-fought 25-19 home win against eighth-ranked Concordia (3-1). Meanwhile, in another Top-10 battle on Sunday in Antigonish, N.S., No. 7 Acadia (3-0) upset StFX (2-1) 32-29, dropping the reigning national champions from first to fourth in the national rankings.

Of note, Ottawa (16) was one of three teams to receive first-place votes in this week’s poll, along with second-seeded Guelph (7) and Acadia (1).

In men’s soccer, the Citadins (4-0-1) also moved up one position to No. 1 following a 1-1 draw versus No. 7 UQTR (4-0-1) and a 3-1 victory over Sherbrooke. UQAM leapfrogs the defending CIS champion York Lions (6-1-1), who drop to No. 3 this week after they suffered their first loss of the campaign, 1-0 to fifth-ranked Windsor (8-1-1), before rebounding with a 3-1 win at Western.

In women’s soccer, reigning national champion Laval (5-0-1) continued to roll with successes against McGill, 3-1, and Concordia, 5-0.

In cross country, Guelph, which has swept the CIS team titles each of the past nine seasons, tops the women and men’s rankings for the third straight week.
