The Saint Mary's Huskies beat the Dalhousie Tigers 5-1 in their second game of 2023.
The Huskies opened the scoring on the first play of the game when Keith Getson found a way past Dalhousie's Connor Hicks (Ottawa, ON). The Huskies extending their lead thirteen minutes later when Walter Flower set up Sam King for the 2-0 goal. The last minutes of the period saw the Tigers get a five-on-three when both goal scorers and Tigers Jackson van de Leest were sent to the box. Unable to capitalize the Tigers headed to the dressing room down by two.
Back and forth play started the second period. The Tigers power play line got an opportunity to go to work 6 minutes in, but we're not able to convert. A second power play was offered up to the Tigers when Huskies Jonathan Hampton went to the box. Finally in the dying seconds of the man advantage, van de Leest found the back of the net. However the Huskies reinstated their two goal advantage less than two minutes later with an Andrew Coxhead goal.
The penalty box door had a workout in the third period with several penalties issued and two Tigers and two Huskies getting 10 minute misconducts. The end result had Saint Mary's on the power play and Jacob Bellamy was able to capitalize. Sam King got his second goal of the game half way though the period to give the Huskies a 5-1 win and him Subway Player of the Game honours.
Saint Mary's have a quick turnaround, hosting UPEI on Wednesday. The Tigers have a difficult road trip next weekend playing UNB on Friday and Moncton on Saturday.
