Evans scores in Tigers win over Capers
Elise Evans had the lone goal for the Tigers in their 1-0 win over Cape Breton on Sunday.
SYDNEY, Nova Scotia — Dalhousie defeated Cape Breton University 1-0 on Sunday at Ness Timmons Field. The decisive goal came in the second half, bolstered by Dalhousie's strong defensive performance, which included five saves from their goalkeeper to secure the shutout victory.
The first half began with Dalhousie applying early pressure as Paris Axam registered two shots, one saved by Cape Breton's goalie Ellie Lancaster and the other blocked. Dalhousie continued to test the defense with additional attempts by Arianna Rushenas and Jordan Mansfield, though both shots went high.
Defensively, Emily Toth stood firm in goal for the Tigers, notably saving a shot from Paige Allaby and seeing another attempt by Audrey Roy hit the post. Despite these chances, neither team managed to break the deadlock, closing the first half at 0-0.
The second half saw Dalhousie seize control with a decisive goal. Toth's efforts in goal were instrumental, as she stopped multiple attempts from Cape Breton's Grace Hannaford in the early minutes, maintaining a scoreless draw. Dalhousie then took the lead when Elise Evans, who was named player of the game, scored the first goal of the game in the 66th minute, capitalizing on the momentum shift.
Following Evans' goal, the Tigers continued to apply pressure. Axam and Sally Steinberg each tested the Capers' defense, but their attempts were thwarted by home goalkeeper Lancaster. Despite Cape Breton's attempts to equalize, including a late corner kick, Dalhousie's defense held strong, closing the half with a 1-0 lead.
Toth made five saves in goal for Dalhousie, keeping a clean sheet during her 90 minutes of play. Axam led the attack with five shots, four of which were on target. Evans contributed a crucial goal, finding the back of the net on one of her two shots.
The Tigers have a bit of a break before returning to the field on October 17 to host the UPEI Panthers and celebrate their graduating athletes.
