First Year Feature: Emily Gardiner
We'd like to introduce you to first year forward, Emily Gardiner
The transition from high school to university athletics is significant. We're highlighting first year athletes from all varsity teams this season who are on the path to achieving greatness here at Dalhousie University.
This week we would like to introduce Emily Gardiner, a first year forward on the women's hockey team. Hailing from Savage Harbour, PEI. Gardiner is studying science.
How long have you been playing hockey?
Since I was 4 (14 years)
How did you start playing hockey or get into it?
My whole family plays hockey, my mom played varsity, and I grew up around the sport.
Did you play any other sports growing up?
I played baseball and softball.
Who is somebody in the hockey community you admired growing up and why?
My dad, he coached me and taught me everything I know and was always my biggest supporter.
What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?
Playing for PEI at the winter Canada games in 2023.
What made you choose Dalhousie University?
I wanted to move away to gain independence, but not too far away. I also wanted to play for a team who was going to compete and win games while being in a supportive environment.
How has the transition from high school sports to university sports been for you so far?
It has been a little stressful, but I love the increased speed and intensity and how everyone here wants to win and not just to have fun.
What are some of your interests outside of sports?
Animals! we have racehorses and used to have draft horses.
Any pre-event superstitions/routines?
I always retape my stick before games.
Any hidden talents?
I can juggle.
