Tigers move on to semifinals

The St. Thomas Tommies were eliminated from the AUS women's hockey playoffs after falling 2-1 to the Dalhousie Tigers in game three of the quarterfinal series, Saturday night in front of 141 spectators at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

Marita Alfieri and Lisa MacLean found the back of the net for the Tigers.

Cassidy McTaggart was the lone goal scorer for the Tommies.

"I think we were close. I think we had enough to beat DAL, but tonight for some reason pucks weren't sitting right for us," Tommies head coach Peter Murphy said.

"We handily outshot them in every game. We needed to get to the dirty areas a little bit more. That's probably what we were missing."

Alfieri opened the scoring 13:59 into the second, beating Tommies netminder Abby Clarke with a wrister from the slot.

The Tommies had an opportunity to tie things up when Andrea Lyon went to the box for hooking, but they couldn't capitalize.

With just 18.4 seconds to go in the period, MacLean notched a power play goal to put the Tigers up 2-0 heading into the third.

Cassidy McTaggart cut the Tigers lead to 2-1 with a power play goal 2:12 into the third period, but the Tommies couldn't close the gap.

"They came out hard in the third," Murphy said. "If we just played three periods like that it may have been better."

The Tigers will move on to the AUS women's hockey semifinals, which begin next week.
