Capers top Tigers 69-56 in AUS Women’s Basketball quarter-finals

(HALIFAX, N.S.) – The Cape Breton Capers topped the Dalhousie Tigers 69-56 on Friday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the Subway AUS Women's Basketball Championship.

The Cape Breton Capers came out strong in the opening quarter of the second women's quarter-final game on Friday, holding a 21-12 edge after the first.

After back-and-forth play from both sides of the court in the second, the Capers stayed ahead, leading 34-24 at the half.

The Capers boasted a 52.6 per cent field goal average in the opening quarter, hitting 10 of 19 shots attempted.

Colleen Keane led the Capers through the first half with 10 points, adding five rebounds and one assist, while Deidre Alexander also posted 10 points for the Tigers, adding two rebounds.

Cape Breton came out hot in the third quarter, going on an 8-0 run and topping the Tigers 23-11 in points. They held a 57-35 lead with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

The Tigers looked for the comeback throughout the fourth, as they posted 21 points compared to the Capers 12, but it would not be enough as Cape Breton held on for the victory.

Dalhousie's Subway player of the game, Deidre Alexander posted a game-high 20 points, adding three rebounds and two assists for the Tigers.

Colleen Keane earned the Subway player of the game for the Capers, posting 18 points in the victory, adding seven rebounds, three assists, and four steals.

The Wilson's Security defensive player of the game for the Dalhousie Tigers was Ainsley MacIntyre, posting six rebounds and two assists. Valentina Primosi earned the Wilson's defensive player of the game award for the Capers, posting four rebounds and two steals.

The Cape Breton Capers now advance to the semifinals, where they will face the second-place Acadia Axewomen on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
