Tigers hold on to beat Sea-Hawks 65-57

(Halifax, NS) The Dalhousie Tigers managed to come away with a 65-57 victory over the Memorial Sea-Hawks on Friday night after watching a 17-point lead evaporate in the third quarter.

 

Sydney Stewart led the Sea-Hawks with 19 points while Tessa Stammberger was at it again with 22 points of her own.

 

After a slow couple minutes to open the first quarter the Tigers found their stride in second half of the first quarter. The two sides traded buckets back-and-forth but the Tigers were able to go on the late run finishing the quarter 21-12.

 

The offense was spread out for Dalhousie as Tessa Stammberger, Ainsley MacIntyre and Sophie Gaube all recorded five points in the frame.

 

Sydney Stewart was able to keep the deficit manageable for the Sea-Hawks putting up 8 points on four easy layups.

 

Dalhousie was able to carry their momentum from the first quarter into the second opening the frame on a 9-2 run.

 

Macintyre really opened the game up hitting a three giving the Tigers a 30-14 lead. Goube continued her break out game scoring five points off a three and a fast break lay up back-to-back to end the quarter.

 

The Tigers took a 38-21 lead in the locker room at the half.

 

Memorial came out flying in the third quarter with an 18-2 run, quickly erasing the large lead Dalhousie had built up.

 

Goube and Stammberger were able to stop the run and give the Tigers some life hitting back-to-back shots making it 47-39.

 

Caroyln Alder came back with a big shot of her own knocking down a three for the Sea-Hawks and making a it just a two possession game.

 

The Tigers managed to come out of the quarter with a 51-42 lead after almost finding themselves trailing.

 

Memorial could not pull off the amazing comeback in the fourth quarter. They cut the lead down to three but never could take the lead.

 

The Tigers took the game 65-57.

 

The two teams will play the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon in the Dalplex with a 1:00pm tipoff.
