Pond leads Sea-Hawks to 68-61 win over Tigers

Kelia Pond had 17 points to lead the Memorial Sea-Hawks as they outlasted the Dalhousie Tigers 68-61 Friday night at the Dalplex. The Sea-Hawks extend their winning streak to three games with the win, while the Tigers are now winless in two games in February.

The win moves the Sea-Hawks to 8-7 on the season while the Tigers drop below .500 at 7-8.

Both teams struggled offensively early, and the game remained scoreless in the first two minutes until Robbi Daley broke the stalemate with a free throw.

The Sea-Hawks led 14-9 with 1:25 minutes left but the Tigers clawed back to cut the lead to 14-11 after ten minutes of play.

The Tigers evened the score at 17 early in the second quarter, but the Sea-Hawks kept up the pressure in the second quarter, looking to put away the Tigers early as they pounded them inside the paint.

The Tigers had a big third quarter, suffocating the Sea-Hawks defensively and holding them to just ten points in the frame, and they took the lead with 4:39 left in the fourth quarter, and held a 49-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Sea-Hawks trailed by as many as eight in the fourth quarter until Sydney Stewart's and-one gave them a 60-57 lead with 4:57 left. They never looked back and Chante Clarkes free throws with 22 seconds left dealed the deal at 68-61 for the Sea-Hawks.

Tessa Stammberger had 19 points and eight rebounds to lead the Tigers, while Courtney Thompson had 14 points on 6-11 shooting to go along with five assists.

The teams will tip off again tomorrow at 11:00am at the Dalplex.
